The Best Uses for Lemon Essential Oil–Harnessing the Power of This Fresh and Uplifting Citrus

Lemon is the top-selling doTERRA essential oil–and for good reason! It has multiple benefits and uses. Lemon has powerful cleaning properties and can purify surfaces and the air, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home. When you add lemon to water, it provides a refreshing boost throughout the day. Lemon can be added to food to enhance its flavor. You can also take Lemon internally for cleansing and digestive benefits and to support healthy respiratory function. When diffused, Lemon is very uplifting and energizing and has been shown to help improve mood. At only $10 wholesale, it doesn’t get much cheaper than that for super high-quality wellness!

Uses
There are so many uses for lemon essential oil, it’s hard to know where to start, so I’ll just jump in!

Cleaning: I’d be remiss not to mention Lemon’s powerful cleaning and disinfecting properties. A little while back, Lauren posted about cleaning with essential oils and of course Lemon came up! Read about that here. Add Lemon oil to a spray bottle of water to clean tables, countertops, and other surfaces. More specifically, you can add about 20-40 drops of oil to a regular 16 oz. spray bottle along with 1/4 cup white vinegar and fill the rest with distilled water. Tada! A completely toxin-free all-purpose spray you could literally bathe your kids in (if you wanted to).  😀 This also adds a sheen and disinfectant to wood–try combining a few drops with olive oil to clean and protect wood surfaces–it’s especially good for cutting boards because the products are food-safe. It also works particularly well in keeping silver from tarnishing and works well on leather products, too.

Diffusing: Since this oil is just like the smell of fresh lemons, it’s perfect to diffuse on a day when you’re feeling in a funk or when your house smells like funk. Since it cleanses the air, it actually gets rid of the odor by eradicating the bacteria that’s causing it, rather than just masking the smell like commercial air fresheners. Lemon pairs well with doTERRA Breathe Respiratory blend, Frankincense, Geranium, Peppermint, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.

Taking Internally for Body Cleansing: Taking lemon essential oil is one of the most powerful cleansing and natural things you could do for your body, and it’s so easy to incorporate into your day! You can add this to your water, carbonated water, orange juice or even your coffee! I know it sounds crazy but it’s actually pretty good. :] Just make sure you’re using a glass, ceramic or stainless steel container to drink out of–lemon is so powerful it will pull the toxins straight out of plastic–just like it does with your body! I was out of it in the hospital once and added lemon essential oil to some tea I was drinking out of a styrofoam cup and watched as the lemon dissolved the styrofoam before my eyes! It was pretty crazy but just goes to show you how powerful it is.

Cleaning and Freshening Laundry: It’s super easy to throw a drop of this in the washing machine with your whites, especially towels and undies, and it will really help to freshen them up. I like to throw a couple drops in the dryer with lavender and my wool dryer balls. It’s not a strong scent you’re left with but the subtle freshness is honestly exactly what I’m looking for. The other thing you can do is make up a “laundry and fabric spritz” in a glass spray bottle with 10 drops lemon, 10 drops lavender and 10 drops wild orange and just spritz the towels in your linen closet once a week to keep things smelling fresh. This would also work nicely on couches, chairs, rugs and beds, just make sure if you have pets (especially cats) that you’re not spraying this where they like to hang out because they really hate citrus essential oils. Trust me on that one.

Improves Digestion: As far as how to take this internally for digestion, I would say as a first line of defense you should be drinking it in a glass of water every morning–a splash of raw apple cider vinegar wouldn’t hurt, either. However, if you are experiencing stomach upset, I’d try two things. The first thing I’d probably suggest is taking a bit of fractionated coconut oil and rubbing a few drops of that together on your abdomen. The other thing I might try, is if you have any empty veggie caps, you can put a few drops in the capsule and take it just like a supplement. If you need to get veggie caps, this is the best place to get them.

Purifies Skin: Ok I know this sounds crazy but I just put 1-2 drops of undiluted lemon essential oil straight onto my face after I’ve cleansed and moisturized and it has been doing amazing things for my skin! It feels 100% pH balanced when I do it. I hadn’t heard of people using it on their face, I just thought of doing it because I used to do this face mask with fresh lemons and honey and it worked really well with my skin, but it took a while to do and it was pretty messy (I’d always get the honey in my hair). I can’t promise this route will be the best for everyone, especially if you have sensitive skin, but give it a try if you’re gutsy. If you do it and it burns, wipe your face off with coconut oil immediately and that should help get off any excess. You should also make sure you’ve got at least 12 hours where you won’t be going out into the sun excessively when putting any citrus oil on exposed skin. Citrus oils are photo-sensitive and will cause your skin to burn more easily! Perfect to do on a Friday night when you’re planning on sleeping in on Saturday (i.e. NOT planning a pool day).

Soothes Sore Throat and Cough: This one really works and is easy to incorporate as well! Just add 1-3 drops to your hot tea with raw honey and you’ll definitely feel the soothing effects right away.

Improves Your Mood: It never fails, I just feel happy when I diffuse lemon! It’s not just ME, either. Lots of research has been done on how lemon essential oil works with our brain to release oxytocin. You can use it diluted on your skin, spritz it in your hair or on your clothes or try it on a diffuser bracelet or necklace. Keep lemon nearby and use it when moodiness or sadness strikes.

Eases Allergies: Seasonal allergies have really been getting me down lately. One combination that really helps is lemon, lavender and peppermint, one drop of each rubbed into the palm of my hands and inhaled deeply through the nose. Do this several times over and enjoy the soothing effects it has on your nasal passages and sinuses.

Well, I hope this is helpful to you as you begin to incorporate lemon essential oil into your daily wellness routine!

The Best Uses for Rosemary Essential Oil — It’s Not Just for Cooking!

When you think of Rosemary essential oil, you may think of roasting a pork tenderloin or flavoring homemade potato soup. But it is oh so much more than that, my friends! What I’ll do today is walk you through the top ten best everyday uses for this common yet sometimes overlooked essential oil so you can take advantage of its incredible benefits.

#1: HAIR RE-GROWTH

Yes! Rosemary essential oil helps with hair re-growth, as consistent use stimulates hair follicles and helps hair grow stronger. Whether you are actively losing hair or you want to act preventatively, Rosemary essential oil can help keep your hair healthy. Add 1-2 drops into your hand with your shampoo, or add 10-15 drops per 8 oz. shampoo bottle and mix thoroughly.

#2: HEALTHY SCALP

I could have lumped this in with #1, but a healthy scalp means a lot to me, since I struggled with the waxy build-up (which acts like dandruff) for about 7 years before I discovered essential oils. It is SO frustrating doing everything you can for your scalp, only to have these itchy flakes that drive you crazy, get all over your clothes and can be so embarassing socially. Enter Rosemary. This oil soothes the scalp–you can try massaging this into your scalp up to 3x a week.*

#3: FOCUS

Rosemary is fabulous for focus and studies have shown it is effective in improving cognitive function. You could try applying to your wrists just before writing your big thesis or diffuse in the kitchen when your kids get home from school. Its uplifting aroma tends to keep our energy up while simultaneously grounding us. Since it has a deep, herbaceous smell, it pairs well in the diffuser with citrus oils–try Rosemary and Lime or Rosemary and Grapefruit (3 drops of each). Using this all-natural alternative to stimulants is a great thing to do for your body, and a great long-term solution for increasing focus.

#4: IMPROVING DIGESTION

Thankfully Rosemary’s delicious flavor is fabulous when used in cooking (particularly meats), because it helps us maintain healthy digestion and can even help ease stomach upset, bloating and constipation! Because essential oils are so potent, only 1-2 drops per dish is needed to flavor your entire meal! This makes the oil a super cost-effective ingredient for upscale dishes as well.

#5: REDUCING NERVOUS TENSION

When taken internally, Rosemary can support our body by easing any nervous tension we may be feeling. You can dilute 1 drop in 4 oz. liquid, place 1 drop in an empty veggie cap or you may choose to diffuse or apply topically (we recommend using fractionated coconut oil as a carrier to dilute–1 teaspoon of coconut oil per drop of essential oil).

#6: PAIN RELIEF

It’s true! Rosemary essential oil can help with pain management. Because it helps stimulate blood flow, Rosemary can be used with sore muscles, headaches, or other ailments to reduce the pain and aid in quicker healing.

#7: SKIN TONER

Run out of your favorite toner? Try Rosemary! Its gentle components help tone skin while removing impurities and helping reduce redness, dryness and inflammation. You could always try adding one drop of Rosemary to your toner nightly.

#8: RESPIRATORY RELIEF

As an antiseptic, Rosemary is incredibly soothing for any kind of respiratory issue you might have going on–colds, sore throats, allergies, bronchial infections and even flu. We’d recommend applying 1-2 drops diluted onto your chest and throat and cupping your hands to your nose and taking several deep breaths to inhale the oil into your lungs.

#9: REMOVING ODORS

Because Rosemary essential oil has antiseptic qualities, it can be used to remove bad-smelling odors from around your house, car, office–even your mouth! Yep–Rosemary can help fight bad breath. If you’re using it to get rid of a pet smell in your house, please keep in mind that pets are usually a lot more sensitive than we are to smell, so they may not like what you’re diffusing. Just make sure they have the option of going elsewhere while you’ve got the diffuser going! If you want to try using Rosemary to freshen your breath, take one drop on your fingertip, press it to the roof of your mouth and then take a drink of water. Feeling refreshed yet?

#10: IMMUNE-BOOSTING

Partied a little too hard last night? Your kid brought home whatever is going around at daycare? Never fear, Rosemary is here! Getting in the habit of using Rosemary regularly around the house is the easiest way to boost your immune system. Who doesn’t love having that lovely smell wafting through your home while actually getting incredible benefits to your body at the same time, instead of all the drawbacks traditional candles and plug-ins inflict. Best ways to use Rosemary for simple immune-boosting–in your cooking, in your diffuser and on your skin.

Best Uses for Grapefruit Essential Oil–The Perfect Oil for Spring

And why Grapefruit Essential Oil is the perfect oil for Spring…

If you are anything like me, you will find a use for everything! I got grapefruit essential oil for FREE this month from doTERRA (comment below if you’d like to know how). So that got me thinking, what are some of the best uses for grapefruit essential oil? I’ve got them all here for you, from smoothie bowls to room spray, it’s all here. Keep reading to get some good ideas! (Link to purchase Grapefruit Essential Oil below)

Real quick, let’s go over the benefits of essential oils. I’d be remiss to not mention that first! Grapefruit essential oil:

-Uplifts the mood

-Has epic cleansing and purifying properties

-Beneficial to the skin

-Can help support a healthy metabolism

Pretty cool, right? The flavor is LEGIT, too, so why not add it to stuff? Now, I have to provide a quick disclaimer here that I would NOT under any circumstances use any type of essential oil other than doTERRA internally for the reasons found here.

OK, now that we’ve got the essentials covered (pun intended), let’s get on to the fun stuff! I’ll list the ways you can incorporate this super-powered fresh oil into your routine this Spring.

For the corporate use of doTERRA International LLC. File distrobution and third party use/sales are restricted.

-Put it in your diffuser with 2 drops grapefruit, 2 drops lime, 2 drops tangerine and 2 drops spearmint for an invigorating Spring cleaning blend. This will not only deliver the benefits of these oils to you aromatically, but it will also clean the air!

-Put it in your ice water for a refreshing calorie free and metabolism-boosting beverage! If you’re going on vacation (or just dreaming of warmer weather), take this oil with you and add 3 drops to any beverage (I love plain ole ice water or carbonated water) in a glass or stainless steel container (you don’t want to put citrus oils in a plastic glass as they are so powerful they will start pulling toxins out of the plastic–WHOA!) This little tasty trick can help you trim some inches off in time for swimsuit season, too (in combination with a balanced diet and exercise, of course).

-Make an easy non-toxic all-purpose cleaner in a glass spray bottle with 1 1/2 cups white vinegar, 1/2 cup distilled water, and 16 drops of grapefruit essential oil.

Make a sweet-smelling room spray in a glass spray bottle, combine 20 drops grapefruit essential oil, 20 drops lemon essential oil & 20 drops lime essential oil, then fill to top with distilled water and shake before use. Feel free to use liberally! Perfect for the bathroom, laundry room, or if you have kids or pets (or a husband), ANY room! ;]

-Add it to your spot treatment for blemishes by combining in a small glass dropper bottle with 3/4 distilled water, 8 drops grapefruit essential oil and 1 teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar. Apply sparingly to blemishes in the evening (and make sure to apply your regular SPF in the morning–excessive citrus oil can make skin sensitive when exposed to sunlight so don’t overdo it!).

-Make a yummy smoothie bowl with fresh mango, fresh kiwi, 1 cup frozen strawberry, 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup cashew, almond, or coconut milk, 1 banana & 6 drops grapefruit essential oil. Blend on high until smooth (we liked using a Nutribullet for quick & easy cleanup), then top with chia seeds, shaved coconut and fresh mango. Enjoy!

Essential Oils for Allergies and Congestion

Essential Oils for Allergies
I’m just gonna jump right in here… It continually blows my mind that we can use essential oils for allergies, BUT it makes sense because ALL of our modern medicine originates from plants. So, if we can distill the essential oil that plants make for their own immunity, bottle it and use it for our own wellness, why wouldn’t we?! And why WOULDN’T it work amazingly well?! It does. It works. And it makes sense that it works. And that’s what I’ll say about that. :]
When I was a kid, I never had any allergy issues! I don’t know why, but I didn’t. I didn’t really understand when people would complain about allergies, either. Couldn’t they just get over it? No, the answer is no, they couldn’t. Turns out allergies majorly SUCK as I have learned as an adult. And sometimes, no matter what over-the-counter drugs (with myriad side effects) you throw at it, or even prescription meds, you still feel terrible for days and sometimes even weeks on end…
:::ENTER ESSENTIAL OILS:::
Not only do they make you feel better immediately, they also help your body heal naturally using its own resources. Amazing. Below I’ll discuss a couple of our favorite essential oils for easing allergy issues.
Breathe Respiratory Blend
Breathe Respiratory Blend
BREATHE Respiratory Blend © is an absolute must for your medicine cabinet, purse, and dresser. What’s in it: Laurel leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint plant, Melaleuca leaf, Lemon peel, Cardamom seed, and Ravintsara leaf. Only dōTERRA© makes this blend, and they know what they’re doing.
WHAT TO DO: If you have that stuffiness that comes with allergies and just can’t clear your airways, take one drop of this blend in your palms and breathe in deeply. Not only will it clear your airways, that raw burning feeling is replaced with a cool soothing feeling. Sooo comforting. I’d say do this like once an hour during the day if you’re really suffering. This is also an awesome one to diffuse at night to keep your airways open and get a good night’s sleep, which will help your body heal!
The other wonderful allergy options are the three single-origin oils Peppermint, Lemon and Lavender!
WHAT TO DO: You can inhale one drop of these together or separately–honestly whichever ones you have with you will help tremendously. You can also add a drop of lemon to your tea and it is so potent and soothing. One cool thing I learned from a Dr. Axe article is that you can take one drop of peppermint and put it on the roof of your mouth and drink some water. Very cooling and soothing to your whole system! *Note: I would NOT ingest any essential oil that didn’t come from dōTERRA. Their testing system (CPTG© Certified Pure Theraputic Grade) is second to none and I trust them. It’s important to me to know that the oils I’m using in my body do not have any fillers or contaminants in them.
I hope this article teaches you that it’s not complicated or difficult to use oils to help you feel better–you can order them today and it’s not expensive, either! Breathe is $20 wholesale (and will last you several months with conservative use–about the same price as a box of Mucinex and way less nasty!) Lemon is $10 wholesale, Lavender is $21 and Peppermint is $20.50. To get the wholesale price, you have to join and be a wholesale member. Your enrolling member would be me-Emily Jones, and my number is 3916348 when you are asked to enter it! Having that wholesale membership is key to getting all the goodness dōTERRA has to offer (including the wholesale price!). Comment below if you need any help or feel free to email me at emily@thatmidnightoil.com and I’ll hook you up!
I hope this posts helps someone get started who is suffering from allergies–you don’t have to! And you can heal yourself naturally and even preventively with the gifts of the earth!

doTERRA Oils for Sleep–A Natural Way to Catch Some ZzZ’s

Baby Sleeping

When it comes to getting good, quality sleep, essential oils are the purest, most natural form of aid out there. There are so many essential oils for sleeping, but I’ll just focus on the main blend today that we use in our house. When you have a baby on the loose, the house is typically scattered with toys, books and random objects already, so it’s nice to just have a few items on the dresser next to the diffuser keeping it visually clutter-free (this is also one key to helping create a restful mind!) The oil I’ll discuss today is the Serenity (Restful Blend).

Serenity  is the holy grail of sleep blends, and it is made by dōTERRA. Don’t let the word “blend” fool you–the ONLY thing that is in this mix are the world’s purest, CPTG© (Certified Pure Theraputic Grade) essential oils. Made from Lavender flower, Cedarwood, Ho Wood Leaf, Ylang Ylang flower, Marjoram leaf, Roman Chamomile flower, Vetiver root, Vanilla bean and Hawaiian Sandalwood, they have come up with a blend that not only smells divine (some people have told me it smells like chocolate to them!), it honestly makes you feel more relaxed the second you smell it, and there are several ways to reap the benefits of this blend.

AROMATICALLY::: Put 1-2 drops of the oil in your palm, rub your hands together and breathe in deeply for a few moments, letting your body take in all the benefits of these oils through the air. OR add 6-8 drops of the blend in your bedroom diffuser for nighttime sleep or in your children’s room for naps.

TOPICALLY::: Put 1-2 drops for adults on wrists, spine, bottoms of feet, or diluted in fractionated coconut oil for children. *Pro-tip: mix a drop of Serenity into your facial moisturizer at night and you will wake up to incredibly supple skin!

INTERNALLY::: Take either the Serenity softgels (dōTERRA makes it easy!) OR put 1-2 drops of the blend in an empty veggie cap and take with a full glass of water 1-2 hours before bedtime.

According to dōTERRA (and me), this blend calms the emotions while creating an overall sense of peace and well-being. No matter how much you are winning at life, we can all use a little of what Serenity has to offer at least once a day.

Another great thing about this blend from the perspective of a budget-conscious mama like myself is that it’s only $30 wholesale for a 15mL bottle (about 300 drops of oil). Considering you only use a couple drops at one time, that gives you between 37.5 to 150 individual applications/uses of this oil, depending on how liberally you are using it. Even for the most liberal of users, at this price, you’re still out less than a dollar every time you use this fantastic blend! A heck of a deal.

Have you tried Serenity Restful Blend? What are your favorite things about it or what other blends do you love for sleep? Let me know in the comments below! :]

doTERRA Oils for Colds–How to Combat Seasonal Threats Naturally

doTERRA Breathe and OnGuard
doTERRA Breathe and OnGuard

Aren’t colds the WORST? There is nothing more annoying than having a cold– feeling *almost* good enough to go to work/watch the kids/get stuff done, but then not really. If you’re anything like me, you want to kick a cold to the curb ASAP. Well, thankfully, we have essential oils for that! Low-cost, high-efficiency, and conveniently located in your home (once you have some)–am I speaking your love language yet?! Ok great–that’s what I thought. ;]

As you might find out from perusing our blog, essential oils can be used for so many things. Because the components of high-quality essential oils contain the benefits of whatever plant they are from, you can use specific oils topically, internally and aromatically to significantly decrease the effects of the cold you are experiencing.

Best Essential Oils for Colds: doTERRA Breathe Respiratory Blend is my absolute go-to when I or anyone in my family has a cold. We diffuse it and roll it on our wrists, temples, sinuses, back of neck, shoulders and bottoms of feet just about every hour (to make a topical roller,  purchase or reuse an empty essential oil roller and add 40 drops of Breathe to the roller, then fill to the top with fractionated coconut oil— and voila!). Breathe blend is an exceptional oil blend to use for a cold because it contains multiple powerhouse essential oils, such as Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca (tea tree), Lemon, Cardamom and some other awesome oils you’ve probably never heard of. These oils help promote easy breathing by relaxing and opening up your airways. Diffuse it in your bedroom about 30 minutes before you go to sleep (and while you sleep), as well as at your desk while you work if you are congested. Not only will this protocol help you breathe easier, the health benefits of the oils will help your body fight off the cold and lessen the effects of the cold, helping you bounce back quicker.

My other go-to during an acute case of cold AND as a preventative during cold season is doTERRA OnGuard Protective Blend. Not only does it smell amazing (think: the way you want your house to smell during the Holidays), it contains so many legit oils (Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary) that help protect your body against seasonal threats, supporting your body’s natural antioxidant defenses. A couple of months ago, I woke up feeling the dreaded coming-down-with-something symptoms–scratchy throat, exhaustion, swimmy head, stopped up nose, coughing, all of it. This was before I had a bunch of oils or even a diffuser, BUT I did have OnGuard (literally the best oil I could possibly have for all the reasons stated above and one of my very top picks that answers the question “if I could only have one oil, what would it be?”) in a roller, so I just applied it directly (diluted in fractionated coconut oil) to my throat, neck and shoulders and massaged it in about once an hour all day. Just the smell of it was relaxing and soothing (if I’d had OnGuard beadlets at the time I’d have been popping a couple of those every hour, too), but, I kid you not, after a couple of hours, I could swear I was starting to feel better. BUT HOW CAN THIS BE?! Just rubbing an oil on your scratchy throat can make it go away?! Yep. This is powerful stuff. The next morning I woke up with that the-day-after feeling when you are coming out of a cold, but guess what? I never got that cold! I like to think the OnGuard helped my body fight off whatever the gunk was that was trying to keep me down.

There are MANY other essential oils that can help boost the immune system, but these two blends pack the most powerful punch, so I suggest you start there.

Have you tried using essential oils for colds? What was the outcome? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Until next time–your sister in essential oils,

Emily

What Is An Essential Oil Diffuser? Where To Buy An Essential Oil Diffuser And Everything You Need To Know

doTERRA diffuser

Unless you’re living under a rock, by now you’ve probably heard of or at least seen an essential oil diffuser and wondered what it was or how it worked. At the very least, you’ve likely heard of someone diffusing oils for aromatic purposes and wondered how they did it. With a diffuser, of course! Now you are probably wondering how to use an essential oil diffuser. Well, here goes.

How an essential oil diffuser works: In short, an essential oil diffuser diffuses, or disperses, essential oil, carried by cold steam, into the air to make it available for breathing. The oil is broken into tiny particles, carried up into the air through the steam, and suspended in the air for several hours, all the while disinfecting the air and providing a wonderful aromatic experience. There are different types of diffusers, but basically, the idea is the same–they are a vehicle for dispersing essential oil into the air for the purposes of inhaling the oil.

Where to buy an essential oil diffuser: If you are interested in purchasing an essential oil diffuser, you are probably looking them up online and getting overwhelmed right about now. And if you’re a budget-savvy mama like me, you’re probably thinking the $17.99 ones on Amazon are looking pretty good right now. Well, think again. Just like anything else in this world, a diffuser should be thought of as an investment, and you should go with a top rated essential oil diffuser. If you have purchased or been gifted some high quality essential oils, though, and you are dying to start diffusing them and you absolutely can’t afford to spend more than $17.99 at the moment, then go for that cheapy Amazon one, but just know I will be saying “I told you so” in 3 months when it’s whizzing and whirring and breaking down like the crappy product it is. I should know–this exact thing is happening to me right now with the diffuser I bought back in December (it’s now March) online–it is starting to break. Of course there’s no warranty to speak of or course of action for me to get my $17.99 back; it’s just gone forever. HOWEVER, let me tell you about my NEW favorite diffuser. The doTERRA Petal Diffuser! This thing is a small wonder–at $47 wholesale ($62.67 retail), it is a steal of a deal. A gorgeous, simple, easy-to-use and easy-to-clean design with a large water reservoir. With only two pieces, there is virtually no setup–you just pop it out of the box, lift the top off, fill to the red marker with water, drop a couple drops of your preferred doTERRA oil in, replace top, plug it in and hit the “MIST” button on the front and BAM! You are instantly receiving the benefits of that oil aromatically (you start smelling the aroma much fast than with other brand diffusers I’ve tried). Love it. What I also love about this is that doTERRA stands behind their products–the Petal Diffuser has a 90-day limited warranty (they will replace it for you if it breaks in the first 3 months), and if for some reason you decide you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund in the first 30 days. The only drawback I’ve found with this diffuser is that it will only run continuously for 4 hours, where I’ve seen others run for a max of 8, which, to me, makes this the perfect diffuser for your living room or office. If you’re looking for one that will run all night long for your bedroom, I’d suggest the doTERRA Lumo Diffuser. That mamma jamma holds a LOT of water but is still compact enough to travel with. Win-win!

The moral of the story is, if you are looking for a great essential oil diffuser, look no further than doTERRA. They’ve got you covered. Bonus: if you’re a wholesale member, you get loyalty points for the Petal Diffuser and the Lumo Diffuser, which you can turn around and use to get free doTERRA product. So awesome. Sorry/not sorry this turned into an advertisement for doTERRA, but I just love them as a company, and they sell wonderful diffusers!

Have you tried a doTERRA diffuser? What did you think? Feel free to leave your comments below.

Until next time–your sister in essential oils,

DoTERRA Essential Oils for Bladder Infections

Since I was little, my mom has struggled with bladder infections and UTI’s. Being a natural remedy kind of person to begin with, she has spent a lot of time trying the basics–cranberry juice, extra water, cranberry supplements, and eventually she landed on her most recent recommendations, which were taking D-Mannose (a simple sugar found in many fruits) and cinnamon every day. The reasons these things have not worked for her were they were either a. cost-prohibitive, b. inconvenient, c. unpleasant d. the amount required was insane or all of the above. Most recently she had been prescribed some low-grade antibiotics for the infection and had been taking those, and while they do help, the infection would come RIGHT BACK when she stopped taking them. So frustrating.

ENTER ESSENTIAL OILS. :] I started using essential oils consistently a few months ago for everything from sinus infections to calming a restless baby, and I have noticed some marked results. As I started reading all the things they could be used for, my mind ran wild with the possibilities. The first and most immediate thing I wanted to start improving was the lives of my family members, so I bought my mom some doTERRA OnGuard softgels to take once a day.
OnGuard soft gel ingredients: Wild Orange Peel: protects the body against seasonal threats*, Clove Bud: supports a healthy immune system*, Black Pepper Seed: supports healthy circulation*, Cinnamon Bark/Leaf: promotes healthy immune function*, Eucalyptus Leaf: purifying and cleansing properties*, Oregano Leaf: helps maintain a healthy immune system*, Rosemary Flower/Leaf: may help support the digestive system*, Melissa Leaf: may help support healthy immune system*

I also made her a 10mL roll-on (for topical application to her bladder area) with a combination of doTERRAOnGuard essential oil blend (same ingredients as above, minus the Black Pepper and Oregano)(20 drops), Frankincense essential oil–otherwise known as the King of Oils because it’s good for everything–(10 drops), doTERRA DigestZen essential oil blend (ingredients: Ginger Rhizome/Root, Peppermint Plant, Caraway Seed, Coriander Seed, Anise Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Fennel Seed essential oils)(5 drops) and doTERRA Oregano essential oil (2 drops), topped off with doTERRA fractionated coconut oil.

The reason I picked these oils were that I had asked around to my oil-using gurus and found out what oils they had experience with and what had worked for them or others they knew. Then I used what I had to make her a combination. She has only just started using the new protocol but I’ll check in with her in a few weeks and see how it’s going. The next day after applying the roller on her bladder area, she did say she woke up feeling “better.” I know that’s not exceptionally detailed, so I’ll continue to follow up with her and post my results here.

Two other things I’d like to try if what she’s using now isn’t enough: Lemongrass essential oil and Juniper Berry essential oil. These two were mentioned over and over in my research, I just didn’t have them on hand so I decided to go with what was readily available first. If this works for her, she will be spending $15 (for the OnGuard beadlets) per month and some change (when you figure in the cost of the roller and ingredients–though the one I made her maybe cost $10 to make and should last her probably 3 months with constant use). Not bad, all things considered! Cost-effective, convenient, and taken in small amounts, all while supporting her body naturally.

***UPDATE!! The roller blend I made her worked! I got Juniper Berry and Lemongrass and we added 5 drops of each to the roller. She used it (rolled it on her abdomen) during the worst of her symptoms three times a day for several months, and is now down to just using it at the first sign of symptoms (which she hasn’t had in over 6 months!) If you know my mom and her constant state of having a UTI or bladder infection, you know this is nothing short of a miracle! The other thing she started trying was the DigestZen softgels (you can achieve the same effect by adding several drops to a veggie cap and taking internally). At this point in her journey this is the ONLY thing she is still doing preventatively and it is working to keep the bladder discomfort at bay.

Have you used essential oils for bladder infections and UTI’s? What worked? I’d love to know so please leave a comment. :]

Until next time,

Emily
