Essential Oils for Grounding: Let’s Get Through Mercury Retrograde

By Brocken Inaglory – Own work, GFDL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3974418

So here I sit on a Sunday night almost forgetting that I need to blog when a good friend sends me a reminder that Mercury is Retrograde! She said that if I needed some inspo this could be a hot topic. So here we are y’all! Let’s dig into some essential oils for making it through Mercury Retrograde together.

So first off let’s do a quick overview: What is Mercury Retrograde? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited that you asked! It is said to be that Mercury is moving in the opposite direction that planet Earth is moving. It is also said that this movement is really just an illusion, but whether it is or isn’t astrologers believe it has some kind of effect on life here on Earth. Now you might want to know my opinion right..that’s why you visited this blog today one might assume!

I’m not an astrologer by ANY means, but I’d like to think there’s some reasoning behind some of the unexplained or random events of people’s lives. That is something I am a true believer in whether you link it to fate, luck, forces of, or just a plain old woke up on the wrong (or right!) side of the bed kind of situation. Either way it’s happening or it’s already happened. I’ve been told by a few and especially my mother “don’t do that….Mercury is in Retrograde!!” The first tens times I heard this statement I was ready to bounce my head off the wall, but as I got older and actually read up on Retrograde I started to understand a little bit better. I feel like you could spend days, months or even years researching all of the things you should and shouldn’t do during Retrograde and I feel those things are great to know! However you can’t always control all of those situations that life throws at you. So now what?

What is something you can control? The essential oils you can grab for during Mercury Retrograde of course (if you thought this too bonus points for you!!). So let’s just dive right in and start with Vetiver! So Vetiver is a member of the grass family with a unique and exotic aroma. Vetiver is known to provide a calming, grounding effect on emotions. To me this screams that it could be helpful in the Retrograde presence. With all of these crazy (or not crazy) situations happening around you why not use something that has a grounding effect?  The next on my list that I want to share is Roman Chamomile.  The reason I am choosing this Essential Oil is because of its soothing properties for the body and soul.  Roman Chamomile grows close to the ground, resembles a daisy and has the scent of an apple.  Ancient Romans used this oil for courage.  For some of you who are skeptical of things during Retrograde this could be an oil for you!  Maybe it can help sooth your mind and put you at ease during these next few weeks.  The last EO I am going to talk about today is Patchouli.  This is another grounding oil, but the way I look at it we need all the grounding we can get!  On top of Patchouli having amazing healthy skincare benefits it has a balancing effect on emotions.  Even if you aren’t a firm believer in many of the effects of times during retrograde, but you like to have oils by your side I think these three can really be of some help.  Once you’ve got yourself grounded or feeling at ease I do believe you can incorporate some uplifting oils as well or even making a blend with one of the ground oils.

With all of this being said I wish you all a peaceful Retrograde, and I am very curious to know what are some of your factories or go-to’s during any time of Retrograde?  I look forward to some discussion!
Until next time,

doTERRA Oils for Colds–How to Combat Seasonal Threats Naturally

Aren’t colds the WORST? There is nothing more annoying than having a cold– feeling *almost* good enough to go to work/watch the kids/get stuff done, but then not really. If you’re anything like me, you want to kick a cold to the curb ASAP. Well, thankfully, we have essential oils for that! Low-cost, high-efficiency, and conveniently located in your home (once you have some)–am I speaking your love language yet?! Ok great–that’s what I thought. ;]

As you might find out from perusing our blog, essential oils can be used for so many things. Because the components of high-quality essential oils contain the benefits of whatever plant they are from, you can use specific oils topically, internally and aromatically to significantly decrease the effects of the cold you are experiencing.

Best Essential Oils for Colds: doTERRA Breathe Respiratory Blend is my absolute go-to when I or anyone in my family has a cold. We diffuse it and roll it on our wrists, temples, sinuses, back of neck, shoulders and bottoms of feet just about every hour (to make a topical roller,  purchase or reuse an empty essential oil roller and add 40 drops of Breathe to the roller, then fill to the top with fractionated coconut oil— and voila!). Breathe blend is an exceptional oil blend to use for a cold because it contains multiple powerhouse essential oils, such as Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca (tea tree), Lemon, Cardamom and some other awesome oils you’ve probably never heard of. These oils help promote easy breathing by relaxing and opening up your airways. Diffuse it in your bedroom about 30 minutes before you go to sleep (and while you sleep), as well as at your desk while you work if you are congested. Not only will this protocol help you breathe easier, the health benefits of the oils will help your body fight off the cold and lessen the effects of the cold, helping you bounce back quicker.

My other go-to during an acute case of cold AND as a preventative during cold season is doTERRA OnGuard Protective Blend. Not only does it smell amazing (think: the way you want your house to smell during the Holidays), it contains so many legit oils (Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary) that help protect your body against seasonal threats, supporting your body’s natural antioxidant defenses. A couple of months ago, I woke up feeling the dreaded coming-down-with-something symptoms–scratchy throat, exhaustion, swimmy head, stopped up nose, coughing, all of it. This was before I had a bunch of oils or even a diffuser, BUT I did have OnGuard (literally the best oil I could possibly have for all the reasons stated above and one of my very top picks that answers the question “if I could only have one oil, what would it be?”) in a roller, so I just applied it directly (diluted in fractionated coconut oil) to my throat, neck and shoulders and massaged it in about once an hour all day. Just the smell of it was relaxing and soothing (if I’d had OnGuard beadlets at the time I’d have been popping a couple of those every hour, too), but, I kid you not, after a couple of hours, I could swear I was starting to feel better. BUT HOW CAN THIS BE?! Just rubbing an oil on your scratchy throat can make it go away?! Yep. This is powerful stuff. The next morning I woke up with that the-day-after feeling when you are coming out of a cold, but guess what? I never got that cold! I like to think the OnGuard helped my body fight off whatever the gunk was that was trying to keep me down.

There are MANY other essential oils that can help boost the immune system, but these two blends pack the most powerful punch, so I suggest you start there.

Have you tried using essential oils for colds? What was the outcome? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Until next time–your sister in essential oils,

Emily

DoTERRA Oils for Bladder & Urinary Tract Health

Since I was little, my mom has struggled with bladder and urinary tract health. Being a natural remedy kind of person to begin with, she has spent a lot of time trying the basics–cranberry juice, extra water, cranberry supplements, and eventually she landed on her most recent recommendations, which were taking D-Mannose (a simple sugar found in many fruits) and cinnamon every day. The reasons these things have not worked for her were they were either a. cost-prohibitive, b. inconvenient, c. unpleasant d. the amount required was insane or all of the above. So frustrating.

ENTER ESSENTIAL OILS. :] I started using essential oils consistently a few months ago for everything from sinus issues to calming a restless baby, and I have noticed some marked results. As I started reading all the things they could be used for, my mind ran wild with the possibilities. The first and most immediate thing I wanted to start improving was the lives of my family members, so I bought my mom some doTERRA OnGuard softgels to take once a day.
OnGuard soft gel ingredients: Wild Orange Peel: protects the body against seasonal threats*, Clove Bud: supports a healthy immune system*, Black Pepper Seed: supports healthy circulation*, Cinnamon Bark/Leaf: promotes healthy immune function*, Eucalyptus Leaf: purifying and cleansing properties*, Oregano Leaf: helps maintain a healthy immune system*, Rosemary Flower/Leaf: may help support the digestive system*, Melissa Leaf: may help support healthy immune system*

I also made her a 10mL roll-on (for topical application to her bladder area) with a combination of doTERRAOnGuard essential oil blend (same ingredients as above, minus the Black Pepper and Oregano)(20 drops), Frankincense essential oil–otherwise known as the King of Oils because it’s good for everything–(10 drops), doTERRA DigestZen essential oil blend (ingredients: Ginger Rhizome/Root, Peppermint Plant, Caraway Seed, Coriander Seed, Anise Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Fennel Seed essential oils)(5 drops) and doTERRA Oregano essential oil (2 drops), topped off with doTERRA fractionated coconut oil.

The reason I picked these oils were that I had asked around to my oil-using gurus and found out what oils they had experience with and what had worked for them or others they knew. Then I used what I had to make her a combination. She has only just started using the new blend but I’ll check in with her in a few weeks and see how it’s going. The next day after applying the roller on her bladder area, she did say she woke up feeling “better.” I know that’s not exceptionally detailed, so I’ll continue to follow up with her and post my results here.

Two other things I’d like to try if what she’s using now isn’t enough: Lemongrass essential oil and Juniper Berry essential oil. These two were mentioned over and over in my research, I just didn’t have them on hand so I decided to go with what was readily available first. If this works for her, she will be spending $15 (for the OnGuard beadlets) per month and some change (when you figure in the cost of the roller and ingredients–though the one I made her maybe cost $10 to make and should last her probably 3 months with constant use). Not bad, all things considered! Cost-effective, convenient, and taken in small amounts, all while supporting her body naturally.

***UPDATE!! The roller blend I made her worked! I got Juniper Berry and Lemongrass and we added 5 drops of each to the roller. She used it (rolled it on her abdomen) during the worst of her symptoms three times a day for several months, and is now down to just using it at the first sign of symptoms (which she hasn’t had in over 6 months!) If you know my mom and her constant state of having bladder discomfort, you know this is nothing short of a miracle! The other thing she started trying was the DigestZen softgels (you can achieve the same effect by adding several drops to a veggie cap and taking internally). At this point in her journey this is the ONLY thing she is still doing preventatively and it is working to keep the bladder discomfort at bay.

Have you used essential oils for bladder and urinary tract health? What worked? I’d love to know so please leave a comment. :]

Until next time,

Emily
